COLLIE Shire Council will write to the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) to request new licensing for Muja C and D power station to ensure clean air in Collie.
Industries identified as prescribed premises require works approval for new works and licensing for existing operations.
Licences are issued by DEC and can be appealed within 21 days after the issue.
The Shire of Collie receives copies of all licences and can lodge appeals.
Licences are renewable annually and the department can change the conditions at each renewal.
In contrast to other licences for other major industries, the Muja C and D power plant has no air emission targets. Air emissions targets cover gaseous emissions of concern such as sulphur dioxide or particulates.
Air quality modelling for the Shotts industrial estate showed emissions from the Muja A, B, C and D power stations of sulphur dioxide and particulates would exceeds National Environment Protection Measure air quality standards. The council will ask for air emission criteria to be included in future licences for the Muja Power Station.
It will also be requested air emission criteria be based on air quality modeling that ensures air quality at places where people live and that it meet National Environment Protection Measure and Kwinana Environmental Standards.
Council will warn that if the matter is not addressed by the next license review, the Shire will consider appealing the licence conditions.
