Digney was nationals' most valuable player

COLLIE’S Scott Digney was the most valuable player in the underwater hockey national grand final in Perth last month.

Digney, the veteran centre forward for the Western Australian men’s elite team won the honour as his team won the division’s gold medal.

The WA team won every game of the competition, which was played at Challenge Stadium.

Jason Miezis - former Australian captain - was also a star player in the same division.

The WA tilt also included a Colts team in the elite division, comprising Collie players Rhys Milburn, Jamie North and Shannon Griffiths.

The Colts team had a fantastic debut in the national competition, unbeaten by all other states and only bowing to the WA elite team to get silver.

Selectors picked Milburn and North for the Australian Elite team for the Southern Hemisphere Tournament later this year.

The WA under-19 team took the silver medal in a nail-biting final against Tasmania. Collie was again well-represented with team captain Shannon Griffiths, Aleshya Snelgar, Jared Magill - who debut in a Nationals competition – and Chad Mitchell as coach.

Snelgar and Magill were selected for the Australian under-19 team. Griffiths was selected for the Australian under-23 team.

The WA women’s team played strongly to win the bronze in a tough competition and included Collie’s Hayley Digney, Rebekah Milburn, Jo Saunders and Aleshya Snelgar.

Milburn and Snelgar were selected for the Australian women’s team.

In the masters division, WA fielded a veteran masters’ team and a ‘country’ masters team.

The latter included Collie’s Chad Mitchell and Drew Griffiths with Jason Miezis as coach.

The masters’ team won gold and the country masters took the silver against strong opposition from interstate and Singapore.

As the competition was hosted by the WA underwater hockey association there were many volunteers involved and Collie people were, again well represented.

Jenny Griffiths was the team manager and volunteer coordinator with Sue Magill, Peter Magill, Sabrina Mitchell, Cherie Snelgar, Max North, Glenyce Milburn and Sharon North as the all important time keepers, scorers and officials.
