Extra security laid on for Premier Coal’s 60th birthday bash

05 Nov, 2009 01:15 PM
COLLIE Police have received information that global warming protesters may target the Wesfarmers Premier Coal Open Day on Sunday.

Police said they have no definite information but they will be closely monitoring the open day, which is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of Western Collieries, which eventually became Wesfarmers Premier Coal.

Premier Coal community relations officer Geoff Blackford said extra security will be present at the open day.

On-site security and the mining company’s own on-site employees would be there, Mr Blackford said. However possible protest was not why extra security would be in place.

“Collie police have said they will pay a couple of visits during the day.” Mr Blackford said.

“There will be extra security because we are expecting a lot of people to arrive, not because we are expecting protesters.

“We are able to handle the people who come out. We are just expecting a heap of visitors and we are able to cater for everyone to come on the day.”

The 60th anniversary open day will run from 11am until 4pm on Sunday at Wesfamers Prem-ier Coal mine site.

Live, local bands This End Up, Incense and a country and western youth band will be playing throughout the day.

There will be helicopter rides for people who have already booked their seats and truck rides in one of the mine’s haul trucks, Mr Blackford said.

“We have set it up to take tours around the workshop, just to give people an idea of what it is like to be on a truck,” Mr Blackford said.

There will also be a bouncy castle, climbing wall and vintage car display as well as mine tours and tours to Lake Kepwari and the Motorplex. “There will be a wave boarding display at Lake Kepwari. A local family will be doing a display on the lake to show its potential,” Mr Blackford said.

“There will also be an event at the Motorplex so people will be able to go there and get some ideas of the area.

“When a bus goes in for the mine tour, a unit will be operating and there will be an area for the bus to pull up to allow visitors to see how the operation works.”
