Fires in lower south-west forests

PEOPLE travelling south of Collie over the weekend are warned of multiple bushfires started by lightning.

The Department of Conservation and Environment (DEC)said Friday afternoon that the uncontained fires were near the following forest areas:Giblett, Dingup, Diamond, Poole, Unicup, Babbington, Warrup and Mooralup.

Then at 8.10pm Friday it issued another bushfire advice for people 33km south-east of Northcliffe for a fire in Babbington State forest, near Deeside Coast Road and Chesapeake Road.

No roads were closed but motorists should remain vigilant and be aware of fire and other emergency services personnel working on site, DEC said

No recreation sites are closed.

Fire crews from the DEC, local bushfire brigades, Forest Products Commission and contractors were on the scene at various fires.

Fixed-wing water bombers, a type 1 helicopter, trucks and heavy earth moving machinery have been sent to assist crews.

The next update will be provided by 11am today(Saturday, February 11) unless the situation changes.

Fire controlled

A BUSHFIRE in a pine plantation near Coalfields Highway yesterday was quickly controlled.

The fire in Cullity’s Pine Plantation was reported about 5.50am Friday.

About 1.5 hectares was burned.

Thirty Bush Fire Service and DEC firefighters attended the fire and mopped up. They were supported by two water bombers and intended monitoring the area for the rest of the day.

The area was also monitored by DEC aerial operations.
