Laboring to save a Liberal voter

19 Nov, 2009 01:27 PM
COLLIE-Preston MLA Mick Murray has proved he is handy to have around in more than caucus debates.

On Sunday he resuscitated 82-year-old Dave Ketteridge of Australind who was suffering a heart-attack.

But when Mr Ketteridge rang up a couple of days later to say “thanks”, he told the Labor MP he was a Liberal voter. Just what does the man have to do to get a vote?

Mr Murray was waiting on people at a seniors’ lunch in Burekup on Sunday. “I was chatting to some of the seniors, who were telling me how old they were, one was 90 and one was 82 and so on,” he said. “There was a man and woman sitting together on the other side of the table, and she suddenly cried out for help.

“I noticed the man’s eyes had rolled back into his head. To be honest, I thought he was joking at first because we were joking about their ages.

“When I realised it was serious, I gave him a thump in the chest.

“Then we laid him on the ground and realised he had no pulse and wasn’t breathing.

“Another woman was there with me on the ground and I looked at her and realised I was going to have to do this.”

Mr Murray then gave the man cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

“When I did the first breath, his chest blew up and I thought he might explode,” Mr Murray said.

“I continued to give him CPR until the ambulance arrived.

“The ambos later told me they really had to work to keep him alive.

“They had to ring the hospital so the doctors were waiting for him.

“The man rang me the next day to say thank you and told me he was a Liberal,” the Labor MP laughed.

Mr Murray said he urged people to do their senior first aid certificate training.

“I did mine about 20 years ago, but it’s amazing how, when something like this happens, your training kicks in,” he said.

“I strongly advocate people to get their training. You never know when it could help, especially with summer coming up and people swimming. The training could save a life.

“If I hadn’t done my training, I might have panicked.”

Mr Murray said volunteers in Brunswick had offered him a refresher training course for free.

He was also considering taking breath freshener and his tooth brush and tooth paste to future engagements in the constituency.
