State Election: Who will you vote for?

04 Sep, 2008 02:19 PM
Confused about who to vote for in the State Election this Saturday? We have made it easy for you. See below for the policies of each local candidate, in their own words.

Mick Murray

Labor Party

“Since I was elected to the seat of Collie-Wellington in 2001, there has only been success in Collie and I want to continue its progress into the future.

I have done a lot for Collie but I am not quite finished – I need one more term to round it out and make Collie a town people can be proud of.

I believe Collie is one of few towns in the South West with a secure future, both in the mining and tourism industry.

I have committed the following policies to Collie: $3.3 million for Lake Kepwari development; $500,000 for Wilson Park Primary School; $500,000 to improve the Collie town centre; I will continue the Coalfields Highway upgrade; $250,000 to build a cover over the Collie swimming pool ($500,000 in total); and $130,000 to install floodlights at the Collie Recreation Ground.

I was instrumental in getting 21 new light industrial area blocks for Collie and I campaigned for $4.5 million for the new ValleyView Aged Care Centre.

I will continue to support the coal industry and oppose nuclear power for WA.

I think my track record on coal-fired power stations speaks for itself with the government agreeing to provide long-term contracts to secure our coal industry, including buying 200 megawatts of power from Griffin Energy to underwrite Bluewaters 2.”

Steve Thomas

Liberal Party

“I have a plan that takes Collie into the future.

I have a plan for Collie that gets services back into town and reverses the years of neglect that has seen the benefits of WA’s economic boom taken out of Collie and sent to Perth.

Promises under the Liberal Government will include Coalfields Highway getting the $20 million upgrade so those who live and work in Collie can travel safely.

Only the Liberal Party is committed to this upgrade.

The Collie Childcare Centre will be upgraded, so Collie parents and families can get the same level of service as Perth ones.

I will invest $1.67 million into the Collie Motorplex – an investment into the youth of Collie as well as Collie’s economy.

I will allocate $500,000 to Wilson Park Primary School and support the upgrade of the Fairview Primary School toilets.

The Liberal Party will match the Labor Party’s funding of $500,000 for Collie’s main street. I believe coal will continue to play a vital role in our energy mix and I have been fighting for Collie to get its fair share of the Federal Clean Coal Fund.

Collie has lost its school dental service at Amaroo Primary School, which is a region-wide crisis that I will be working to fix.

I will keep an office in Collie, because I believe in the future of Collie.”

Richard Chapman

Greens Party

“I have run my own computer sales and servicing business based in Donnybrook for the past eight years and I have strong interest in the environment, organic growing and renewable energy.

I have been involved with many community organisations, including setting up the community-owned Bendigo Bank in Donnybrook and Capel, the local Telecentre, schools and various landcare, conservation and organic-growing groups.

The biggest threats to our wellbeing and economy are climate change and peak oil.

I think coal-fired power stations should be phased out as soon as possible to meet the challenges of climate change.

Our future success must be powered by renewable energy, and we should lock up as much carbon dioxide as possible in existing and new forests, bushland, plantations and in the soil. I see the major areas of growth in Collie being the development of a renewable energy industry and a further increase in the plantation and farm forestry sector.

I think much of the infrastructure and work skills existing in the Collie area can be applied to the design, manufacture and management of renewable energy generation.

We could, and in my view should, be developing our own manufacturing base for photovoltaic panels, wind turbines and solar-thermal stations.

The use of timber for construction should be encouraged, as it is energy efficient and locks up significant amounts of carbon from the atmosphere.

Farm and plantation-based production of timber should be assisted, and I would support moves for more value adding both in the production of timber-based products and a pulp and paper mill.”

Wayne Barnett

Christian Democratic Party

“I cannot go away from what I believe in.

I am a country boy who believes it is a privilege, not a right, to live where we do.

I believe we must do all in our power to maintain this part of the country that we are responsible for.

I think we should do more with water at Wellington Dam and get a desalination plant built at the bottom of the weir.

If the Collie Shire wants to go ahead with re-zoning, then there should be fair compensation and consultation for residents.

I am against prostitution and I believe the principals of the Bible about sanctity of life should be held.

I am also against abortions, same-sex marriages and living wills. In regards to coal, I believe it is the only reliable source at the moment, which was pointed out by the Varanus Island explosion, but coal will eventually run out and we need to explore more options for when it is unavailable. I want a better world to live in and so do you. I want fair and equal treatment for all people and so do you.”

Keith Hopper

WA Family First Party

“As a father of two adult children, a teacher for 32 years and shire councillor for 14 years, I see the need to improve standards throughout the community and in Parliament.

Only WA Family First is promoting the return of common sense and respect as key values and making sure the people are heard.

Locally, I am seeking a balance between the needs of the coal industry and the wider community in and around Collie, ensuring that traditional land uses and valuable ecology is not placed at risk.

I want improved health and education facilities in smaller communities, including Collie and Donnybrook.

I would also like special grants to councils experiencing massive population growth to provide improved community facilities without exploding the community rates bill.

WA Family First will give pensioners $100 extra fortnightly as a pension top-up, scrap speed cameras and replace them with more police patrols and better driver training, and make criminals serve every day of their prison sentences.”
