State help for urea plant

07 Apr, 2011 04:00 AM
PERDAMAN’S $3.8 billion urea plant in Collie received a major boost last Friday when the state government pledged $83.5 million in water and road upgrades to support the project.

Premier Colin Barnett was in town with Perdaman’s chairman Vikas Rambal to announce that over the next four years the government will secure land and upgrade vital water and infrastructure in Collie.

Perdaman intends to start building the plant in September at the Shotts Industrial Park, seven kilometres from Collie, to transform coal into urea using coal gasification technology.

The government’s financial injection is an important step in establishing the “world-class facility” which will create new jobs and opportunities in the south-west, Mr Barnett said. “This project will have massive significance for WA and the south-west, introducing a new industry, new employment and business opportunities and boosting exports,” he said.
