MARC Giancola won a 25-lap feature race at the SmokeFree Collie Speedway at the weekend.

The speedway was the venue for the fourth round of the Super Sedan Summer Series.

Giancola started the race with the record of winning the last five times at the venue, but would start from position seven in the feature race.

Kodee Brown, who was nominated the Broome Sports Star of the Year, started from pole position after consistent results in the heats.

Kevin Bell also had a great night.

Dustin Higgs and father Gary Higgs started from the second row, while Murray Iwanow and Blake Jackson started from row three.

Bell got the best off the start.

Brown was pursued by Gary and Dustin Higgs, Iwanow and Giancola, who passed his opponents one by one.

Dustin Higgs started to have handling problems and slipped back to fifth, as the battle intensified for the first sixth positions.

A restart for Jackson and John O’Callaghan, who collided at the back of the field, allowed Bell’s small lead to diminish.

Giancola hit the lead mid race and instantly opened a lead on his opposition, while Bell, Gary Higgs, Brown, Iwanow and Dustin Higgs continued battling for the minor placings.

A second restart for Jackson and O’Callaghan momentarily brought the field back together, but Giancola again cleared out from the field.

Bell, who had resisted numerous attacks by Gary Higgs and Murray Iwanow, eventually succumbed to the pressure running wide out of turn four, losing spots to both drivers.

But Giancola was in a class of his own, winning by 6.457 seconds in a dominant display.

He won his sixth successive event at the South West venue.

Gary Higgs won the battle for the minor placings, with Iwanow, Bell, Brown and Dustin Higgs finishing in sixth place.

Earlier, the heat races were exceptional with Brown winning the opener.

Heat two was one of the best races seen in many years, with Kevin Bell, Bert Vosbergen and Dustin Higgs fighting out a three way battle for 10 laps.

Bell prevailed over Higgs and veteran Vosbergen.

Murray Iwanow won the third heat narrowly.

Series leader, Gary Higgs won heat five from Giancola and John O’Callaghan.

Brown won the final heat which gave him pole position in the main event.

Bert Vosbergen sustained damage to the front end of his Pantera after spinning in heat six. This sidelined him for the main event.

The support program was equally exciting as the V8s provided thrills and spills. Alec Melvin turned his car upside down for the second time in eight days.

The car rolled violently in turn two, finishing on the wheels.

Melvin was shaken but otherwise fine.

Shaun Fitzgerald was hit from behind in his street stock and slammed into the wall on the front straight.

A four car collision resulted.

Wayne Bird spun his Production Sedan on the entrance to the front straight which left Steven Perry with no room to pass.

It resulted in both cars sustaining serious damage.

David Padmore slammed into the wall on the back straight in his street stock causing a delay while the ambulance crew attended. Fortunately, Padmore was fine.

Greg Avins bounced back in the Street Stock division to win top points.

Josh Davies won the feature race. It was his second feature race win.

Ricky Nuccini continued his good work in the Production Sedans finishing second in two of the heat races.

Darren Blight of Katanning won the feature race after failing in two heat races earlier in the night.

In heat one a loose dip stick allowed oil to escape on the hot exhaust resulting in a fire. The race was stopped, the fire put out and Blight was able to drive the car back to the pits.

Smarter than Smoking New Star Juniors raced well.

Neil Frazer was the top driver. Ethan Genev tried hard through the heats but could only manage a win in heat one and finished second in two other heats.

Morgan Melvin won two heat races in the Smarter than Smoking Top Star.

He was no match for Brenton Lapworth in the final but still managed second place.

The SmokeFree Collie Speedway will be open to the Monster Truck Show this week and again in a week’s time for the next night of speedway racing for the Collie Street Stock Championships.
