Girls basketball
COLLIE division one girls defeated Detroits 23-19 last week.
The team got off to a slow start against a much taller side and found it hard to penetrate inside the keyway.
Shannen King hit some nice outside shots which kept the team within reach by the end of the first half.
Collie went into the second half trailing by six points.
Strong defence and quick hands — Blaire Bebbington and Chand-ler Sanford — enabled Collie to score on fast breaks and with two minutes to go hit the front and held on to a four-point win.
Division two
THE division two girls drew 32-32 with Zinkis.
This was a high-scoring and fast game with both teams working the ball to their advantage.
Kira Bebbington worked hard at both ends of the court.
Tenae McDonald ran the court well scoring on fast breaks.
Strong rebounding by Chantelle Fontana aided by the defence of Jane Pearson, Brierley Sanford and newcomer Shelby Latham helped the team hold on to draw the game.
Game two on October 23.
COLLIE’S under-14 girls played the tenacious Bunbury-based Poison Ivy and discovered what a difference a week can make in basketball. The girls lost 38-14 but look forward to redeeming themselves this week.
They were unprepared for Poison Ivy’s intensity, resulting in many early turnovers which put the team immediately onto the back foot.
Collie settled in the second half to apply pressure to their opponents.
Kate Varis penetrated the keyway and reduced the scoreboard deficit and Courtney Salmeri exerted good defensive pressure to the opposition ball carriers.
However, Poison Ivy’s versatility enabled it to have multiple goal scorers who were able to answer every Collie challenge.
Poison Ivy ran out comfortable winners against a tired, post-faction carnival Collie unit which could not sustain the challenge against such quality opposition.
Eaton under-14 girls game one on October 16.
THE girls opened their season with a dominant display against the Bunbury Chasers.
They dominated the boards and outscored the Chasers in a one-sided encounter.
Small forwards Lucy Barrett and Braydee Thompson provided the team with many assists while Dana Tanner rebounded strongly under the basket.
All players featured repeatedly on the score sheet and the girls ran away with a comfortable 43-0 victory.
The girls were complimented by the opposition bench for the sportsmanship they displayed toward their opponents throughout the game.
