THE Collie Amateur Swimming Club went to Northam over the weekend to compete in the 51st Country Pennants Championships.

Collie competed in B-grade against teams from Narrogin, Northam, Carnarvon, Karratha and Golden West Dolphins (Australind).

Coach Ashley Hollins said he was proud of his young team of 14. Every swimmer achieved personal best times.

Jonty and Patrick Hollins, Breanna and Daniel King and Josh and Rebecca Woodman won medals.

After a 6.45am warm-up on Saturday morning the competition began with the medley relays.

Emma Bentley competed in the girls nine-year-old events and swam a personal best (PB) time for her 50m freestyle and finished fifth in her breaststroke race.

She also swam the backstroke leg in the girl’s 12-years medley and was the second swimmer in the freestyle relay.

Competing in the girls 10-years events, Rebecca Woodman won three bronze medals in freestyle (PB), backstroke and butterfly (PB) races.

She placed fourth in breaststroke (PB) after a close race. Woodman swam the butterfly leg of the girls 12-years medley and backstroke in the 16’s medley. She was the last swimmer in the girls 12-year freestyle relay and first in the 14’s.

At his first country pennants, 10-year-old Jameson Moloney swam in the breaststroke leg in the boys 16 years relay. Competing in the boys 10-year events he swam a PB to finish fourth in freestyle, fifth in backstroke and swam a strong breaststroke race (fourth) to be just tipped at the finish. He also swam in the second leg of the 16-years freestyle relay.

Ten-year-old Tahlia Norris competed up in the girl’s 11-years events and place fifth in her races. She and achieved PB times in butterfly and breaststroke and freestyle taking 3.90 seconds off in freestyle.

Norris swam the freestyle leg in the girls 12-year relay and was the third swimmer in the 12’s freestyle relay.

Competing in the girls 12-years events, Georgia Moloney swam PB times in freestyle and breaststroke. She also swam the breaststroke legs in the girls 12 and 14 years medley relays and was the first swimmer in the 12-years freestyle relay and second in the 14’s.

Gold medallist, Patrick Hollins competed in the 12-year boys events and won Collie’s only gold medal in an exciting 50m breaststroke race with a 8.40 second PB time.

He also swam PB’s in freestyle (fourth) and backstroke (fifth).

Hollins swam the backstroke leg for the men’s open and boys 16 year’s medley relay and swam in the open and 16’s freestyle relay.

Thirteen-year-old Sheridan King swam in 10 events over two days. She competed in the girls individual 13-year 100m events and swam a 9.28 second PB time in her freestyle (fourth), narrowly missing the bronze medal by less than a second.

She also swam PB’s in backstroke, fly and breaststroke races. King swam the butterfly leg of the women’s open, girls 14 and16 years medley relays and was the last swimmer in the girls 14-years freestyle relay and first swimmer in the 16’s and open women’s freestyle relays.

Thirteen-year-old Tiffany Latham swam in the girls 14-year 100m events with PB times in all races. She placed fourth in butterfly (6.19sec PB) and took 14.95 seconds off her backstroke time, 4.46 off freestyle, and 5.57 off breaststroke. She also swam the third leg of the girls 14 and 16yrs freestyle relays and brought the girls home in the 14’s medley.

Josh Woodman competed in the boys 14-years events and won a bronze medal in his 100m breaststroke race, he placed fourth in butterfly and backstroke narrowly missing the bronze medal by 0.30seconds.

Josh also swam the freestyle leg of the senior medley relay and butterfly in the 16’s medley and was the last swimmer in the 16’s freestyle relay and third in the open men’s .

Breanna King competed in the girls 15-years events and won a bronze medal in a close 100m breaststroke (PB) race, with just 0.23 seconds separating second and third.

Swimming another close 100m backstroke (5.16sec PB) race place fourth, just missing bronze by 0.50 seconds. She also swam fourth place 100 freestyle (PB) and fifth fly(PB).

King swam the last leg (freestyle) of all the girls16-years and women’s open medley and freestyle relays.

Swimming in the boys 15-years 100m events Jonty Hollins won a silver medal in breaststroke (4.91sec PB) race, and swam a 6.86 second personal best time in the 100m freestyle race winning him a bronze medal. Hollins placed fourth in backstroke (8.92 sec PB) and fly. He also swam the breaststroke leg of the senior men’s open relay team and freestyle in the 16’s medley and was the first swimmer for the 16’s and open freestyle relays.

Swimming up in the girls 16-years 100m freestyle (PB) and backstroke events was Shelby Latham (15). She took 12.37 seconds off her personal best backstroke time and finished in fourth place.

Latham also swam in the open women’s 100m breaststroke race and finished in third place, but was disqualified for not touching with two hands. She swam the backstroke legs in the 16 and open relays and was the second swimmer for the freestyle relays.

Jacinta Byrne (15) swam in the senior open women’s 100m freestyle and placed fourth with a 7.42sec PB time.

She also placed fourth in the girls 16-years butterfly (PB) and 100m breaststroke events. Byrne swam the breaststroke legs in the 16’s and open women’s medley relays and swam the third leg in the open women’s freestyle relay.

Daniel King got off to a nervous start in the senior men’s open 100m freestyle relay, disqualified for leaving the block early.

He made up for it by winning silver medals in the men’s 17 and over 50m backstroke (PB) and butterfly (PB) races.

He placed fourth in a close men’s open 100m breaststroke (PB). King swam the butterfly leg in the open medley relay and was the last swimmer in the freestyle relay.

Thirty two clubs participated over two days in 542 events. Returning to the competition this year were clubs from Busselton, Dalwallinu, Gingin, Kalgoorlie and Karratha. Moora and Mandurah entered two teams. Training for all swimmers started again on Wednesday and there is a time trial on Friday night.
