CHARCOAL Jack won the 2010 Caltex King Coal Cup in Collie on Sunday.

Byford trainer reinsman Shannon Suvaljko took the honours at the meeting.

Shannon has an impressive record at the track, driving a treble with the Ray Jones trained Valhalla Will in the first event, his own nomination, Robbery in the second and the winner of the main event with Charcoal Jack for trainer Bernard James.

An excellent crowd witnessed competitive racing while good trading was experienced in the bar and tote.

Driver of the runner-up, Stephen Reed, earlier won with Raegin Gloves for Harvey trainer Kevin Egerton-Green and another of his drives, Rich Life, ran second.

Other winners included the Darren Schofield trained and driven Illuminator, Dealt Ace of Hearts for Matthew White and Robert McLoughlan and Obi Wan driven by Chris Playle for Deidre Whitfield.

Give Me Bundy, trained by Debra Ashcroft and driven by husband Errol, made a good race debut for second with Average Joe running fourth for them in the main event.

Trent Wheeler drove The Early Crow into second place from a 30-metre handicap in the opening event for Busselton trainer Darryl Stead to continue his good form. In the last week, Trent drove his father’s, club president Brian Wheeler, horse Licorice Twist to a good fourth in Albany on Friday as well as a second with Pandemic in the main event.

He steered the consistent Disco Belle to an unlucky third the previous Tuesday after suffering severe interference in Harvey.

Five draws were made from the Chocolate Wheel.

Winners were Gail Rowland who won a massage from Karen McGuckin, Geoff Foster won a cordless kettle, Laurel Dhu won a sandwich maker, Shaylee Earl won an umbrella and Bill Whelan won the big prize, the Kalbarri holiday.

Plenty of other prizes are available for the remaining three meetings.

Local trainers have Albany (Friday), Bunbury (Saturday) and Narrogin (Tuesday) meetings to consider with the highlight the 2010 Hankook Tyres Great Southern Council Derby in Narrogin.

Collie trainer Peter Hemsley had his first win as a driver in more than eight years when Annual Vacation led throughout at Albany last Friday night.

Hemsley trains the three-year-old filly, which is a half sister to his talented six-year-old Pandemic.

Because regular driver Trent Wheeler was committed to another drive in the race, Hemsley took over the reins.

Annual Vacation began like a gazelle from barrier one and the reinsman sat quiet as she took him to an impressive win.

She had finished unplaced at her previous two starts this season, however poor barrier draws were no help.

Few punters were brave enough to include her in their calculations, including part owners, brothers Peter and Phil Hemsley, and she paid $36.90 for a win, $6.80 a place.

Although it was her first win, breeding suggests the daughter of former outstanding stallion Northern Lights will continue to improve with maturity.

Elder brother Pandemic is in this category after his second in the feature event that night after a hard run from the back line.

The gelding will take on even stronger opposition in the 2010 Albany Pacing Cup on Friday night and Hemsley is hopeful of a win with better luck.
