BIG Brett Smith snatched a one point win in the Collie Golf Club’s stableford sweepstakes event last Saturday.
Smith finished on 41 points to shade vice-captain Graham Williams, who played in the morning and compiled a neat 40 points. Both the winner and runner-up wiped a hole.
Matt Harker took third spot on a countback from Alan Kent after both finished on 39 points.
Other good scores –
Simone Botica, Jim Larsen 38, Ron Annandale, Fred Bronickis, Les McGill, Bryan Simpson 37.
Williams had a good day with the flat stick, sinking a “bomb” on No. 6 to take the longest putt novelty. He also claimed the novelty for nearest the pin on No. 4 with a low runner which bobbled its way to within three metres of the hole. Other novelties were won by Stephen Farquhar (7), Ron Annandale (14), and Matt Harker (15 and 18).
The field of 32 was “par” for the course so close to Christmas day.
Tuesday’s leisure day stableford was won in style by big hitting Greg Martin with a tidy 40 points.
Martin had two to spare to Boyup Brook’s Tim Mead, on 3u8, with a further point to spare to the older Mead – Chris – on 37.
Kim Metcalfe maintained his recent good form to finish in the vouchers, on 37.
Eleven players took out cards for the event.
Mick Pokrywka was a popular winner in last Thursday’s pre-Christmas nine hole scroungers event.
Pokrywka finished with 21 points pipping head scrounger Ed Riley on 20.
There were six players on 19 and they all got vouchers. Those on 19 were Phil Warburton, Wayne Waywood, Graham Williams, Mike Daley, Eric Annandale and Frank Battista.
Chris Stewart was one worse than par – 378 – when winning the gross section.
Riley picked up the nearest the pin novelty with a cracking shot on No. 4, while Ian Annandale (6) and Garry Hine (9) also claimed novelties.
George Newlands and Phil Warburton have won the last two veterans’ events.
Newlands beat Alan Banks on a spin after both had scored 29 points in the pre-Christmas event. Dave Brunswick had 28 and Ed Riley 27 in the small field of 12.
Warburton won Tuesday’s event with an impressive 30 points, one better than Fred Bronickis, on 29, with Ed Riley scoring 28, Dave Brunswick 27 and Peter Gray 25 and claiming prizes in the field of 13.
There was no Sunday scroungers event last weekend due to Christmas day. Sunday scroungers will resume on Sunday, January 29.
An 18 hole stableford will be played on Saturday for club trophies. The normal nine hole scroungers event will be played today, with leisure day and veterans events next Tuesday.
