A 20-YEAR-OLD Collie Bowls Club tournament will go ahead this year following funding from the new owners of the Griffin Coal mine, Lanco Infratech.
Lanco Resources Australia director Raj Selvendra, company lawyer Harry Pinder and Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray visited the bowling club on last Thursday.
A $4000 cheque was presented to club captain, Bill Barrett, for the tournament - known as "The Griffin" - prize money.
It will be held on January 11 and 12.
It is a two-day event for country bowlers, with players coming from Kalgoorlie, Esperance "and everywhere in between", Mr Barrett said.
Mr Selvendra said Mr Murray contacted him soon after Lanco took over the Griffin mine.
"He recommended that we meet with the bowling club - and we did," Mr Selvendra said.
"He told us about the tournament and the number of people involved."
Mr Selvendra said he considered the event a "cause worth supporting".
