LOCAL 14-year-old Jaymee-Lee Smith recently fought her way into the Australian under-18 World Championships team and will fight in Egypt in April.
It comes after she won the World Junior Championships Australian Team selection in Perth.
In impressive style, Smith ended the final bout in the second round after the referee enforced the mercy rule. This gave Smith a 20-2 victory.
Smith’s coach, Justin Warren – the 2010 Collie “Wall of Champions” Inductee for tae kwon do - said she defeated the Australian number two ranked from the division above.
He said the opponent could not handle Smith’s footwork and power.
“She will now put her arsenal of kicks and punches to the test by taking on the world’s best under-18s in full contact tae kwon do action that includes kicks to the body and head and punches to the body,” he said.
Smith also recently won the 2011 Collie Junior Sportsperson of the Year, 2011 International Tae Kwon Do Club’s Championship runner-up, the 2011 Junior Under-18 Black Belt Australian Champion and 2011 WA State Champion at age 13.
Warren said her achievements showed her consistency, improvement and ability.
After a small break, Smith will enter a stage of intense training that will involve a lot of fitness, technique and strategic training.
“She will put in many hours of sparring experienced and bigger opponents as part of her conditioning,” he said.
Warren said Korea traditionally dominated these events.
“Now champions come from all countries and no doubt Egypt will be tough, but for Jayme-Lee her focus is to do her best. It is a great opportunity that only a few will get a chance to compete in. This time it is her chance and she will be ready when her name is called out to contest and represent her country,” he said.
