A LOCAL dog lover will run a public awareness rally in Forrest Street on Saturday over the State Government's new breed specific dog legislation.
Dianne Murray is campaigning against the government's new laws to protect people's right to choose what dog breed they want.
Ms Murray does not believe the new laws will improve public safety.
Under the proposed laws, dog owners could face up to 10 years' jail if their pet kills someone or puts a person's life in danger.
The laws would also ban the sale, purchase, breeding and advertising of restricted breeds, including American pit bulls.
Ms Murray said although her dogs are not at risk, she believes people need the freedom to choose.
She decided to host this Saturday's rally because the Western Australians Against Breed Specific Legislation group is running a rally outside parliament house on the same day.
She is urging the government to adopt the Calgary model, which is used in parts of Canada and north America and is based on education and awareness.
Mr Murray believes the new laws would have a negative effect on locals, many who have dogs, such as pig dogs, that are being targeted by the new laws.
Ms Murray will be outside Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray's office from 9am Saturday.
Dogs are not allowed as it is on the main street, Ms Murray said.
