''Why do the rich and famous give their children such ridiculous names?'' Peaches Geldof, age 14, wrote in Britain's Telegraph, shortly after Gwyneth Paltrow announced she had called her first-born Apple.
''Mine has haunted me all of my life, and will continue to do so … I'm not Jane or Sarah or Samantha: I am Peaches. This doesn't make sense to me at all. Then again, I was going to be called Angel Delight at one point, so I suppose I can count myself lucky.''
Peaches Geldof was never going to be able to escape the legacy of her parents - both too clever, too eccentric, too vibrant for that. Given the genes, she was always going to be, in the moving words of her father, Bob, the ''wildest, funniest, cleverest, wittiest and the most bonkers of all of us''. As a tribute, it could not have been more stunning: beyond pain; his beautiful child; destroyed afresh.
The Geldofs have endured tragedy after tragedy. In 2011, Geldof said that the loss of Paula had left him ''beyond despair''.
When I interviewed Geldof that same year, he told me: ''I don't talk about my children. They think I'm a tiresome loser.'' He was protective of them, like any father.
On the 24-hour news channels there has been a lot of talk of Peaches having been a DJ, a model, a socialite. When one commentator said she was now a devoted mother of two young boys the presenter added, ''Yes, but she was also a party girl, wasn't she?'' Which was a flippant way of undermining the life of a girl who was just 11 when her own mother was found dead.
So what if Peaches happened to like a party? So what if she had taken drugs? However she died, there is still a terrible tragedy at its heart, a horrific history that has repeated itself: young children left without their mother.
But let us leave the last words to Peaches, who summed herself up pretty well in that column about her name. ''Life for me hasn't always been peaches and cream (all puns intended). When I tell people my name, most laugh incredulously.
''I also get a lot of lascivious comments: 'Ooh, you're a juicy piece of fruit, aren't you, young lady?' 'I'd like to take a bite out of that peach' … I can, however, see the plus side. It's unusual, it's exotic, it's not boring … It's easy to forget a Mary, but if you're named after a piece of fruit …''
