SKATE park contractors have dug up an artefact thought to be older than Collie itself.
A heritage expert will visit the town to accurately date the object and give a history of how it was used in Collie.
The artefact is thought to be a section of wood staved pipe used to deliver water in the 1800s.
Shire of Collie SuperTowns project manager Geoff Klem said the piece of pipe was rare.
"When the contractors found the pipe I did some research and only found one other displayed in a Sydney museum," Mr Klem said.
"This pipe was dated 1880-1890 which is around the time of the town being built.
"However, we can't be certain of this until the heritage adviser visits."
Mr Klem believes the pipe would have tunnelled to the river to supply water to the town.
"How it works is they cut the timber on an angle so the next piece of wood fits neatly into it, then they put wire around the wood to pull it together," Mr Klem said.
"The idea is similar to how a wine barrel works."
The artefact has been stored at the Collie Library.
