A MAN has told court he set dangerous cannabis booby traps to avoid working with local dealers.
Luke William Sloan was growing cannabis at his Mary Street home when police raided the property on February 14.
A legal representative for the 32-year-old told Collie Magistrates Court on Wednesday April 9 the traps were set with intention to cause fear rather than injury.
Sloan used nails, fish hooks and razor blades to protect his crops and fend off thieves.
His legal representative said Sloan feared losing his personal supply and having to work with dealers.
In an attempt to prevent his worst fear happening, the court was told, friends told Sloan to booby trap his supply so word would reach intruders.
The court was told Sloan was using the cannabis for pain management.
The magistrate told Sloan his plan wasn't well thought out and was for his own selfish purposes.
"If the police had been hurt you would've been in serious trouble today," the magistrate said.
He was fined $750 for cultivating a prohibited plant and $3000 for setting dangerous traps.
