When East Perth meets Subiaco at Patersons Stadium on Sunday to decide the 2014 Western Australian Football League premiership, footy fans may not realise they are witnessing a historic moment.
Indeed, unless they make a howler of a decision, you might not even notice Lauren French and Sally Boud at all.
The 24-year-old umpires grew up together and both got into umpiring through their high-school maths teacher Warren Beckwith. who invited the pair to try out boundary umpiring in the WA Amateur Football League as 15-year-olds.
On Sunday they will share a historic moment. In an Australian first, Lauren and Sally will take opposite ends of the field as goal umpires for the WAFL league grand final - the first time two females have officiated together in a season decider at that high a level.
It's a long way from their beginnings in the amateur league and, although both Sally and Lauren are aware of how much scrutiny they will be under, Lauren probably has a better idea just how quickly things can turn.
She was widely tipped to be appointed as the goal umpire in last year's WAFL grand final until fate, in the form of the faintest breath of a Claremont boot - intervened in the preliminary final.
"I called an East Perth goal, and the vision showed a slight diversion in the ball and they deemed that it had scraped a Claremont player's boots," she said.
"That call was tough, you know, they had to play it back so many times in slow motion to decide what had actually happened, and I've got not even a split second to make that call during the game,..it's extremely difficult.
"It was that call that cost me a grand final and I think there were a few tears, but you just reset and focus on next year and get back into it.
"I think, for the WAFL, it would have been easy to overlook that mistake and give me a game, but I was cut and that's how the game is, that's how it should be."
Football fans, particularly those who grew up on country footy where the goal umpire might retire for a bucket of chips and a soft drink at half-time, may find the amount of training that goes into goal umpiring surprising.
It wouldn't seem to be an activity that demands five-kilometre and two-kilometre time trials, but the reality, especially for umpires wanting to one day make the AFL grade, is that it does.
"We're state league level so we've got to be professional and we've got an image to uphold," Sally said.
"We've got fitness training twice a week, some of the umpires have skin-folds taken and we've got fitness benchmarks we have to meet in two kilometre and five kilometre time-trials.
"Pre-season we tend to focus on the time trials and then during the season we move into agility and a lot more sprint work, a lot more fast-paced reaction work, a lot of cone drills and hurdles and weaving and changing direction.
"The hardest part of it is mental, particularly if you're umpiring a game where the majority of the play is down one end. To keep concentrating when the ball just isn't coming down...you might get the first score at your end around the 27-minute mark of the quarter and holding your concentration can be hard.
"The last few years we've had to earn our spot, nothing is given to us and I think if anything we have to work harder, because guys are naturally a little bit stronger and a little bit quicker than us. But we hold our own."
The amount of scrutiny Sally and Lauren are under is tremendous, and no man knows that better than WAFL umpire manager Darryl Sinclair.
He's extremely proud of the work the Western Australian Football Commission has done in promoting umpiring to women and he firmly believes the key to their success is true equality.
There are currently 13 female umpires in the WAFL system - 11 goal umpires and two boundary umpires spread across the Colts, Reserves and League competition, more than any other state in Australia.
"You don't earn a WAFL grand final just because you're a woman, we need our umpires to be spot on so we judge them on how they perform in games," he said.
"It's a credit to Lauren and Sally that they've been selected, because it's very hard to get a grand final slot and the amount of training they have to do, it's a huge work-load.
"The girls do two kilometre time trials, five kilometre time trials, beep tests...most people have no concept of the amount of training you have to do as a goal umpire at that level.
""They've had setbacks, it doesn't happen overnight...the level of scrutiny they're under at the highest level is incredible.
"We assess them every week. they get vision of their games, we go over their skills and their agility, if the ball was touched, if they should have straddled the line...it's bloody technical.
"If you go and watch just a goal umpire for a quarter, at the game, it's actually amazing.
"It's a real eye opener, the amount of work they put in."
While the AFL is the ultimate aim for both Sally and Lauren, at the moment they're simply focused on doing their best work at the pointy end of the WAFL season.
"We've been with the WAFL for eight years and we've earned this," Lauren said.
"The knockbacks have made us stronger, and I'm really looking forward to making the right calls this weekend," Sally said.
As for female central field umpires, Sinclair believes it is inevitable but, at the moment, a long way off.
"South Australia have had a woman umpire an SANFL league game, and I think that will definitely happen in WA sooner or later but I do think that's a few years off," he said.
"We've got a wealth of talent in the system at the moment and the current crop of girls we have coming through, they're going to be in the system for the next five or six years, and those younger girls will look to Lauren and Sally and see they can really make it."
