WA police say before the new "spitters and biters" bill was passed in parliament on Thursday, officers had a nervous six-month wait for blood tests results to see if they caught an infectious disease.
Police union boss George Tilbury said under the new the Mandatory Testing Bill, police officers will now only have to wait a few days.
He said one officer was reluctant to kiss his soon-to-be wife after their wedding, because he feared he could transfer an infectious disease after he was spat in the mouth by a woman.
Mr Tilbury said the union has been lobbying the state government for years to have mandatory testing for offenders who bite and spat at officers.
"This issue has been on our agenda since it was first raised at the 2008 Annual Conference by the Eastern Goldfields Branch and was resurrected again in 2012 after an executive motion," he said.
"A key part of our lobbying included personal accounts from members who have endured the torturous six-month wait for test results.
"Members have told harrowing stories about withdrawing from family and friends because they feared they would infect them."
Acting Police Minister John Day said the bill would ease concerns of officers who were attacked while on duty.
"In 2013, 147 police were exposed to bodily fluids," he said.
"This legislation will allow for the taking of blood samples from the offender which helps in diagnosis, clinical management and treatment of the exposed police officer."
"The testing will only happen if there is a possibility of the transfer of an infectious disease - for example the transfer of bodily fluid through broken skin".
WA is the second state, behind Queensland to introduce such a bill. But in WA a blood test can come from an inspector or higher. In Queensland police must obtain a court order.
