A WIRE trap strung bet ween two trees has cut the neck of a quad bike rider and knocked him from his vehicle.
Last week 18-year-old Kurtis Patterson was riding on a dirt track about 400 metres behind the Collie tip near the Coalfields Highway.
As he approached some trees he was suddenly caught on a two millimetre thick wire which then pulled him from his quad.
"I never saw it coming," he said.
"It pulled me back and it was all very sudden, I was in shock."
The teenager said he was driving at least 15 kmh.
Having suffered grazing to his neck, he said it was lucky he was not driving faster.
"I was just dwindling at the time," he said.
"Normally I'd be going a lot quicker."
Collie Police said they wanted to make clear the danger involved.
Sergeant Mick Williams said if the perpetrator was caught, they could be charged with attempted murder.
"This is dangerous stuff, if he were going faster it could've taken his head off," Mr Williams said.
"As Collie is surrounded by vast amounts of bushland, there have been ongoing complaints of off road motor bike activities by disgruntled community members."
However, riding in these areas is legal.
"It appears that someone has taken matters into their own hands and has strung up wire between two trees to injure or disable local dirt bike riders," Mr Williams said.
Mr Patterson said he had being caught in stray wiring before and was worried about driving in the area.
But he said this time it was a deliberate act.
"There's a fence line and that's where the actual wire has come from because all of the fence line has fallen down," Mr Patterson said.
"It's a commonly used track."
Collie Police are seeking information from the community to identify a person of interest who is placing wire on tracks surrounding Collie.
Any information can be delivered to Collie Police Station or to Crime Stoppers.
