Basketball Australia will meet free-to-air broadcasters next month as the search to find the WNBL a new television home intensifies, with offers already fielded to live stream matches.
After the ABC announced it would end a 35-year partnership with the league at the end of this season, Basketball Australia is pursuing all options, including a potential one-hour highlights program.
Basketball Australia chief Anthony Moore said: "The approach I've taken is to work through what we think is the best model to take to commercial TV.
"That means being open to changing the way we actually televise our game.
"Rather than taking a knee-jerk response and saying we have to have one live game a week on Saturday afternoon, what might be a better way?
"One live game on free to air TV is ratings dependent, so how do we build the best proposition to showcase the WNBL?"
Channel Ten, which shows the men's league, the NBL, is one broadcaster Moore plans to sit down with. Fox Sports is another option.
Moore is keen to get a live streaming subscription service up and running for next season, which the NBL has enjoyed for more than two years.
It is hoped it can also generate more global exposure of the league, given the presence of big-name stars who have played overseas such as Lauren Jackson, Penny Taylor and Elizabeth Cambage.
The Canberra Capitals live streamed their first home game of 2012-13 internally, but were banned from doing so by Basketball Australia due to reservations about quality.
"We're certainly still interested in pursuing it and we've had a number of approaches, which is terrific," Moore said.
"It's about getting our story right, getting our strategy right before we go and see the broadcasters.
"We're looking to get in front of some broadcasters through January. We've got some preliminary dicsussion we'll be having around that time."
The Australian Sports Commission has completed its six-month review of the WNBL, with the findings to be distributed to the clubs next week.
The 150-page document, which has 53 recommendations, will be made public early in the new year.
The appointment of a dedicated WNBL general manager is one of the major changes already confirmed by Basketball Australia.
"It looked at everything - marketing, player contracts, optimum number of teams, league structure, when it's played and number of games," Moore said.
"A number of recommendations are Basketball Australia-related, and how we structure and promote the organisation to market and promote our league."
The ABC's W-League coverage will alsoend with Sunday's grand final between Perth Glory and Canberra United at nib Stadium.
