SHADOW Racing and Gaming Minister Mick Murray wants an inquiry to investigate if live baiting is occurring in the WA greyhound industry.
The Liberals and Nationals have voted to reject WA Labor's motion for an investigation to ensure cruelty like live baiting does not occur in the WA greyhound industry.
Mr Murray was outraged that an investigation was voted down.
"Not a single Liberal or National Member of Parliament believed these shocking examples of animal cruelty were important enough to investigate.
The motion also calls for the investigation to ensure all animal welfare in the industry is maintained and appropriate safeguards are put in place to eliminate the possibility of live baiting occurring in the future.
ABC's Four Corners program revealed shocking examples of cruelty in the Eastern States, including 'live' baiting of rabbits, possums and piglets.
"The revelations in the Four Corners report are too horrific to ignore. Liberals and Nationals had an opportunity to make certain these appalling practices don't happen here."
Mr Murray believes these issues should be taken more seriously.
"They walked away from their responsibility and let petty politics get in the way.
"Most reasonable Western Australians will think it's fair enough for some due diligence to make sure live baiting or other examples of extreme cruelty don't occur in our State," Mr Murray said.
"The Barnett Government must immediately undertake this investigation," Mr Murray said.
"Western Australians must have full confidence in the local greyhound industry, to be sure that there is no wrongdoing occurring.
"I have no evidence of live baiting in Western Australia, although there has been some talk that it may have occurred.
"Only an open investigation undertaken by the Government will give the public full confidence in the industry and ensure live baiting will not take place in WA in the future."
