NOT pleased with the amount of rubbish accumulating at Welling ton National Park, one four-wheel-drive group decided to do something about it.
On Sunday, members of the Wellington Region 4WD Care Group spent the day pulling out car wrecks and filling trailers with rubbish.
Organiser Glenn Silva said the group worked with the Department of Parks and Wildlife to pinpoint the worst locations.
“It was a co-op between us and DPaW to help protect this wonderful resource,” he said.
“We saw the article in the Collie Mail and were disgusted by the mess, which spurred us to action."
The article was viewed more than 50,000 times and the mess at Wellington National Park hit a nerve with many.
"A lot of people were out raged about the mess but few put their hands up to help,” Mr Silva said.
“Wellington National Park is a privilege, not a right.
“If you abuse the privilege, then you’ll lose it.
“We want out kids and grandkids to be able to enjoy it also.”
Organiser Tanya Wilmot-Silva urged the community to join future clean-ups.
“If you don’t like the problem, then be part of solution,” she said.
“We would like to thank Bunbury 4x4, Bunbury Muffler and Towbar 4WD and ARB along with Opposite Lock for supporting us.
“They have been extremely generous with donations of prizes to give away on the day.
“We would also like to thank the Shire for assisting us with tip vouchers.”
Several trailer-loads of rubbish were deposited at the end of the day and five car wrecks were pulled out of the bush.
National Park Ranger Jamie Gault said it was fantastic to see the community step in a help look after the park.
“The department is dedicated to working with four-wheel-drive clubs to help look after our tracks,” he said.
“Working with like-minded people is fantastic and a significant amount of rubbish was collected.
“We can’t do what we do without our volunteers.”
