THE Kerrs are one saucy family, turning their coveted sauce recipe into their namesake.
Dusty River sauces, named after Shane and Jennifer Kerr’s two sons, found their way on to shop shelves recently, after 15 years of recipe perfecting.
“I’ve always loved my cooking and when I started making the sauces I would give it to friends and family,” Mr Kerr said.
“And people would tell me I should bottle it and sell it – that’s where it all started.”
It was only when the home cook started looking at selling his popular sauces, that they found their name.
It was a friend who suggested naming it after the couple’s sons, Dusty and River.
“We both have three children each from previous marriages, and River and Dusty were our two children together,” Mr Kerr said.
“Dusty wasn’t even born yet when we came up with the name, so we couldn’t change his name after naming the sauce after him.”
What started as a small operation, with Mr Kerr making and bottling the tomato and chilli sauces at home, soon outgrew his Pinjarra home.
“I would be making 100 bottles a day and selling 150,” he said.
“I had to take it to a professional manufacturing kitchen in Perth who make and bottle it for me.
“I still visit regularly to make sure it’s done right.”
Dusty River sauces can be found at Gilbert’s Fresh Market, The Cook’s Kitchen and Carcoola Handymart.
