Brisbane MP Teresa Gambaro has ruled herself out of the running for the vacant Speaker's position in Federal Parliament.
There had been speculation Ms Gambaro could be a candidate for the position, vacated by Bronwyn Bishop on Sunday, but on Tuesday evening she poured cold water on the prospect.
"In recent days there has been much speculation surrounding different potential candidates for the position of Speaker," she said.
"While it has been humbling to see my name mentioned in this context, I want to go on record as saying that I am 100 per cent focused on representing the people of Brisbane vigorously in the Parliament.
"As such, I will not be a candidate for the position."
Another name mentioned in dispatches was Jane Prentice, the member for the west Brisbane seat of Ryan, but former Howard government minister Phil Ruddock remained the favourite.
South Australian Andrew Southcott has declared his intention to contest the position, while Victorian Tony Smith was also considered a possible candidate.
Another possible candidate, Deputy Speaker Bruce Scott, announced on Monday he would not recontest his seat of Maranoa at the next federal election.
Mrs Bishop resigned as Speaker on Sunday after three weeks of intense media and political pressure over an expenses scandal that included the charter of a helicopter to fly from Melbourne to Geelong.
