A Perth toddler has undergone plastic surgery and needed nearly 50 stitches after being mauled by a pet Siberian husky in Marangaroo.
Two-year-old Ariana is still recovering in Joondalup hospital following the unprovoked attack by the dog at her father's home on Tuesday afternoon.
Although the toddler is expected to be released from hospital on Thursday, just in time for Christmas, there were fears it could have been much worse with the dog narrowly missing her eye.
Speaking to Ten News on Wednesday night, Ariana's mother Karla Coleman described the shocking moment she saw her daughter for the first time after the attack.
"When I actually saw her it was very full on because I wasn't expecting it to be that bad, because I wasn't told it was that bad.
"The dog was sitting at his feet and it was a bit of an unprovoked attack, she has gone to pat the dog apparently and the dog has just gone and latched on to her."
It is believed that rangers are compiling a report on the incident and that the father has spoken to by the authorities and the police.
It was originally reported that the City of Stirling was awaiting the results of the report before deciding whether or not the dog needs to be put down - but the investigation is actually being overseen by the City of Wanneroo and the matter has been handed over to their rangers.
As of Thursday morning the dog had not been seized and the report had still not been filed.
Karla said the terrifying ordeal should serve as a reminder to all parents to take extra care around pets.
"If it was my pet and it did something like that to a child I would be absolutely devastated and I just dont think I would feel safe having my child around that dog anymore," she told Ten News.
"Just keep an eye on the dogs and the children as well. I love pets and my daughter absolutely loves dogs, but understand that dogs have personalities too and they relay things a bit differently to us."
