CHESS lovers rejoice there is a new club for old and young alike.
Chrissy Kelly and her son Jacob decided start up a chess club at the Collie library and have put the word out to get other locals who enjoy a game of chess to join in.
Ms Kelly said she wanted to encourage other people in the community to do something stimulating that didn’t involve technology.
“We hope to get some people to come together and join the club for the love of chess,” she said.
“My son loves chess and I want to support him in doing something stimulating and social that doesn’t involve technology.”
“It’s a good way for kids to get off the games to socialise.”
“It’s good to flick the TV off and play a board game.”
Ms Kelly said when she approached the library with the idea they were more than happy to help.
“The Collie library had chess equipment from when the old chess club ran 13 years ago,’ she said.
“They were more than happy to host us.”
Ms Kelly said anyone is welcome to join and they are able to help beginners to learn to play.
“Members don’t have to know how to play as they can be taught – the club is for everyone at all stages of the game,” she said.
“It’s a good game for people to connect and socialise.”
Jacob Kelly said he enjoys playing chess because of the skill and maths involved.
“They used to play it in medieval times, and it would be good to keep an old tradition alive,” he said.
“It involves a lot of maths and I love maths, it’s just really fun to play.”
“It’s a challenging game that gets you thinking.”
The club will also be a chance for those at beginner level to learn off more experienced players.
The club will meet at the Collie Library this Thursday from 4-5pm, it’s free to join and snacks will be provided by Ms Kelly.
