A COLLIE man has narrowly avoided prison time after lying to police.
Kaiotea Te Karanga Te Kani gave a statement to Police which provided a false alibi for a person charged with a burglary offence.
The 30-year-old avoided an immediate term of imprisonment due to a number matters personal to him and his previous good record.
Te Kani plead guilty to Attempt to Pervert the Course of Justice and was sentenced on February 1 in the Bunbury District Court to a term of 8 months imprisonment suspended for 15 months.
"People making false statements to Police is considered an extremely serious offence by the Courts," Collie Police Senior Sergeant Mike Dean said.
