Five Perth students are part of a growing number of teenagers embracing the sport of free running in WA and they have revealed their favourite spots to practice the acrobatic activity in the city.
The group of boys from Pulse Freerun have been training in free running for about three years.
Free running is an activity where participants use city and rural landscapes to perform acrobatic movements in order to get from point A to point B.
Matthew Birch features in the group's latest video which shows the 16-year-old performing stunts at Elizabeth Quay and in Perth CBD, before copping a knock to the head in a flip gone wrong.
He said since getting into the sport at the tender age of 12-years-old, he had seen it triple in popularity in Perth.
"It's getting pretty big," Matthew said.
"When I first started there was only a small group of older guys that were getting together every now and again, but now there's a lot of gyms and academies popping up to train safely so new kids can progress in a safe environment."
Matthew said public spaces around the WA Museum, Elizabeth Quay, Garden City and Fremantle Jetty are some of the places that are good for free running.
"Elizabeth Quay is a pretty recent one, that's actually a really great training spot because there are lots of walls and jumps that you can do," he said.
But the sport is not without its risks, with Matthew breaking his ankle while trying to do a double flip off a jetty in 2015.
"I'd done (the trick) in the same place about 30 times or so – I didn't brace for the impact, normally you would lower yourself to the ground and use your legs as shock absorbers," he said.
"I broke it in two places, I had to get surgery."
