FLAT tyres, broken wheels, and some testing weather, were not enough to stop Wayne and Anne Millman from completing the long drive from Collie to Darwin in their 1928 model A Ford.
The model A Ford enthusiasts made the trek to Darwin to attend the Model A Ford National Rally, which is being held in Katherine this weekend.
The Collie couple decided to turn the drive into a fundraising mission, donating one hundred per cent of funds raised along the way to the Royal Flying Doctor Service, a charity which has personally helped their family.
“My wife had an accident 4 years ago and had to use it, so we thought it would be a good idea to raise some funds for them,” Mr Millman said.
“One hundred per cent of what we raise goes towards the cause.”
“We have collected over $1000 in tins already, If someone wants to take a photo with the car, we encourage them to make a donation.”
Mr Millman said the cars generate quite a bit of interest everywhere they go.
“The rally includes Ford models from 1928 to 1931 and ours is a 1928 ute,” he said.
There are about 90 model A Fords at the meeting, half of which have driven up, and half that have been towed up on the back of a trailer.”
The couple have had only a few minor setbacks on their journey so far.
“We have had a couple of flat tyres and broken wheels on the way but nothing major,” Mr Millman said.
We are towing a camper trailer we built, which has most of our things in it.”
The couple are currently in Darwin, and will be back in Collie on June 22, after a total of eight weeks on the road.
Mr Millman said he was planning to go on his next adventure solo.
“I am planning on driving the Gibb River Road in my model A ute,” he said.
I think I will do that one on my own, I think this one is enough for my wife.”
Mr Millman said they hope to raise as much as they can for the cause.
“I hope Collie gets behind us, and donates to a very worthy cause,” he said.
