Hard-fought loss

THE Collie Mongrels took on the Dunsborough Dungbeetles in the first round of the South West 15's rugby competition on Saturday. In terrible conditions 11 Collie players took on a full side of 15 players plus two subs. Collie’s spirit never wavered and to Dunsborough’s credit they played with good sportsmanship. Collie kicked off and immediately put the pressure on with big tackles from Prep Poata and ChubbyJaz Koro. Although Collie had less defenders, Dunsborough struggled to break the line. The pressure told though, with Dunsborough capitalising, forcing handling errors and poor judgement in attack leading to four first-half tries to none. Dreams of a comeback were slim but hope was restored with three extra players hitting the paddock. Bullocking runs from Matt Wilson and Raa Rogers helped the cause. New recruit Rian Nepe directed the backs superbly and Ryan Johnson troubled the defence every time he touched the ball. Finally Dunsboroughs’ line broke, twice, first with a disallowed try, then some nice passing and a bit of continuity sent Wilson over for a try but it was too little too late, with Dunsborough winning 27-5. Next week Collie take on Margaret River Gropers, who after a comfortable win over Bunbury, should go into the game confident. If Collie turns up with 11 players again then that confidence is justified, though a full Collie team would give them a real run for their money.
