STUDENTS at Collie Senior High School (CSHS) participated in the Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth (PARTY) Program last month.
18 Year 10 students, along with CSHS staff, were shown the equipment and procedures used by paramedics and emergency doctors to stabilise trauma patients at Bunbury Regional Hospital.
The students were shown footage of traffic accidents, with medical staff demonstrating road-side procedures.
The group also heard talks from quadriplegics about the recovery process and long-term affect of spinal injuries.
The program was designed to illustrate the patient's perspective, highlighting the fear, uncertainty and loss of control associated with trauma.
The program originated in Canada and has operated in Bunbury since 2011, winning a WA Country Health Service South West and Quality Award.
