Girls footy fun on the rise

FEMALE footy is growing across the country and the Collie Eagles Junior Football club is looking at ways to promote girl’s footy to attract more players. Currently the club has 10 girls playing from pre-primary age to Year 5 and four female committee members out of the 10. As of next season, the AFL will be introducing a national women’s league and this season has been playing women’s football curtain raisers before selected AFL games. The Collie Juniors see this as a great opportunity to promote girls footy in Collie and build on the number of girls they have playing. Currently in the South West Junior Football League girls are able to play with the boys up until the end of Year 8, however there is now a six-team Youth Girl’s competition in Bunbury for girls from Years 7 to 11. Pathways are being created for girls to be able to keep playing footy so the idea is to make it enjoyable and to get their friends to join in. Contact the junior registrar Aaron Worlley on 0430 551 055 or email a.worlley@bigpond.com. Pictured with the players are club treasurer Sonya Wright and club secretary Stacey Henderson.
