The latest figures from the National Visitor Survey have shown a spike in intrastate visitor numbers in Western Australia over the past 12 months.
Visitor numbers grew 12.4 per cent, while their spending grew 26.2 per cent to $4 billion.
Leisure visitor numbers increased by 17.9 per cent and business traveller numbers grew 19 per cent.
Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said the low Australian dollar, lower cost of fuel and good value food and accommodation was increased WA regional holiday appeal.
“Last summer saw Western Australians re-embrace the great regional WA holiday,” he said
“We’ve had a mini regional tourism boom as Western Australians opted for a regional WA holiday over Bali.
“Western Australians travelling to the South West were up 23 per cent and to the North West were up 22 per cent.
“By comparison, there was only a 3 per cent growth in Western Australians visiting Perth.”
Interstate visitor spending decreased 7.3 per cent ($102 million), partly due to a 23.5 per cent decrease in interstate leisure tourist spending.
“While Western Australians were enjoying regional WA, we are continuing to lose interstate leisure tourists and dollars” he said.
“Locals know that WA is a great holiday destination with amazing experiences on offer, but I think it’s time to tell the rest of Australia.
“We encourage all Western Australians to get behind the Just Another Day in WA campaign.
“Next time you’re enjoying life in WA take a photo and tell your story on social media using the #justanotherdayinWA.
“Not only will you be celebrating our great State, but you will help attract visitors, tourism dollars and jobs to WA.”
