DUNSBOROUGH Dungbeetles hosted the Collie Mongrels on Saturday, July 2 in perfect weather conditions, and what was a great game.
The Mongrels went down with a big squad of 24 to take on a Dunsborough team of 14.
Quite a turnaround from round 1 where Collie took on Dunsborough with 11 players to their 17.
Coming off an emphatic win over Margaret River, Collie went into the game confident and hungry to make up for the first round loss.
Collie kicked off and quickly exerted their dominance with hard tackles, great ruck play and defensive pressure of the highest quality.
It was too much for the Dungbeetles handle, leaking in six tries in the first half giving Collie a 36-0 half-time lead.
The second half went much the same as the first.
Dunsborough to their credit tackled till the end and never gave up but struggled to stop the onslaught.
They did however score a late consolation try to leave the scores 56-5 at full-time.
There were 10 try-scorers for Collie in a pretty one-sided affair, which puts the team in great stead for the finals ahead.
Byron Edwards, Peter Bamber, Matthew Waters, Prep Poata, Steve Rogers, Ryan Johnson, Tatua Tai-Rakena, Jamal Clarke, Ethan Cookson and Grant Algeo all crossing for tries with Daniel Hurley, Steve Rogers and Stevie Hema all converting once each.
It was a solid performance by all involved, with Karewa Tupaea and Terry Pritchard serving the backs well with hard runs and slick passing.
Every forward stood up and made their presence felt in a dominant display with too many top performers to name individually.
All teams have a week off with a competition bye before the run home to the finals begins.
Although the Mongrels have some good momentum building they will be using the break to soothe any niggling injuries and get everyone’s fitness right for the business end of the season. Great work Mongrels. Keep it up!
