Collie is set to host National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day cultural celebrations next week.
The event will take place at the Collie Community Garden on Thursday, August 4 from 11am to 1pm for children 0 to 5 years old.
The occasion will feature cultural activities, an interactive walk, vegetable seedling planting and traditional food.
It will also include a performance from Wilson park Primary School students and a Welcome to Country by Joe Northover.
South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) Maternal Child Health Coordinator Julie-Ann Dowdell said the event showcases the tireless work of community service providers.
“Children’s Day is an important day to celebrate the strengths and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children,” she said.
“The event is for all children and will be a great chance for our Aboriginal children to share their culture with all of their kindy friends.
“We have been overwhelmed by the support of local service providers who will help make the first official National Children’s Day in Collie special.”
The celebration is aided by the collaboration between Ngalang Boodja, Collie Community Gardens, Child and Parent Centre – Collie Valley, Wilson Park Primary School, WA Country Health Service - South West Boodjari Yorgas and Koolangka program and SWAMS.
“It’s also a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of these services and the families and children they support,” Ms Dowdell said.
“The plan is to run this every year, so we hope our first one is a huge success.”
