A Dunsborough man has posted a heart-warming video of himself rescuing a dolphin trapped on the South West town's foreshore.
Graham Skender said he was heading home from work when he spotted the marine mammal struggling in the shallows, caught in seaweed that was stopping it swimming to clear water.
The tide was going out fast - so Mr Skender hopped to it, wading into the water to push the dolphin clear.
"Took a couple of try's to get her out deep enough. Eventually got out over the weed to deeper water. Something you don't get to do every day!!!!," Mr Skender posted online.
Reviewing the footage, Marine Biologist Phil Coulthard from Bunbury's Dolphin Discovery Centre said the mammal was definintely trapped and that the local had "done it right" by pushing the animal forward instead of dragging it backward.
However, Mr Coulthard said people who spot distressed marine wildlife should contact the Department of Parks and Wildlife'sWildcare helpline to alert rangers and get expert advice.
"If the animal is distressed and needs immediate rescue they talk you through appropriate steps but it's also best to wait for them to come - there are officers dotted right along the coast and they can arrive at the scene pretty quickly," Mr Coulthard said.
