Just weeks after another parcel thief was caught on camera stealing parcels from a Perth home, Australia Post has announced it will trial delivering packages in the early evening when you're more likely to be home.
Australia Post's latest $36 million profit is a turnaround from last year's $222 million loss and the national postie is looking for more ways to boost its bottom line.
The continuing expansion of online shopping has driven profits from parcel deliveries up by eight percent while payments from traditional letter services are continuing their downward spiral.
Keen to capitalise on the trend and shore up its profits, Australia Post said in a statement to 7 News that it will start a trial delivering parcels in the early evening - when people are more likely to be home.
This reflects a desire by Australia Post to move away from its letters business, which it said is in a structural decline.
"We've protected tax payers from what looked like a six billion dollar blowout in the losses that we were going to incur," a spokesperson for Australia Post said.
During the trial packages will be delivered to residences between five and seven at night in addition to regular daytime deliveries.
