Local disability advocate, the Shire of Collie has been short listed as a finalist in the 2016 National Disability Awards to be held at Parliament House, on 7 November.
The National Disability Awards recognise the achievements of people and organisations that have improved the lives of people with disability.
The Shire has been selected as a finalist for the Excellence in Inclusive Community Design Award for the upgrade and development of new infrastructure in the central business district to improve public buildings and facilities for people with disability.
All improvements and new infrastructure include innovative design and have been completed to the highest standard of accessibility.
One improvement to the town includes an upgrade to the existing 50m Olympic-size swimming pool that now includes a purpose-built ramp access that is suitable for both wheelchair users and people with impaired mobility.
A beach wheelchair is available for use at the pool for any person who requires it. Another inclusion is a leisure pool incorporating various automated water play equipment.
The completion of Stage Two of the Collie – Allanson trail, Central Park, the Skate Park and the Art Gallery are further examples of the recent achievements within Collie that all incorporate inclusive design.
The Council has more plans to further enhance the facilities available to increase accessibility for people with disability.
“It is a great honour to have Council’s work recognised in this way. This achievement showcases the considerable effort that has been undertaken to make Collie an inclusive community”, said Shire President Wayne Sanford.
“Council aims to promote an understanding of people with disability and encourage support for their dignity, rights and well-being,” said Mr Sanford.
The Awards are a major part of the Commonwealth Government’s celebration of International Day of People with Disability.
International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) on 3 December is an opportunity to make positive changes to the lives of 4 million Australians.
IDPwD is a United Nations sanctioned day that celebrates progress in breaking down barriers, opening doors, and realising an inclusive society for all.
The winners of the 2016 National Disability Awards will be announced on 7 November.
