FAST internet is ramping up in Collie with hundreds of local residents now able to connect to the NBN network for the first time using Fibre to the Node (FTTN) technology.
The NBN network first arrived in Collie in March 2016, and since then almost 380 locals have been made eligible to connect using Fixed Wireless technology.
Almost 1200 additional homes and businesses in Collie, in areas including Allanson, are now eligible to connect to the NBN network via new FTTN services, setting new benchmarks for the area’s broadband speeds and reliability.
A further 3000 premises in the area will switch on in early November.
Telstra Area General Manager Boyd Brown said the launch of Telstra services around Collie would give locals the opportunity to use a variety of new and emerging technologies.
“These are exciting times for the Collie community as the continued rollout of the NBN network marks a new connected era for locals,” he said.
“What’s signifigant about the NBN is that it’s a faster method of transmission for broadband into the home than what people have experienced on the copper network.”
Mr Brown said residents will be able to more freely stream services such as Netflix.
“That’s what’s exciting, because there are so many more applications and things that people will be able to use, there’s obviously a lot of home businesses, there’s a lot of students, and from a medical perspective there’s a whole bunch of things that people will be able to do, to download, and to stream,” he said.
“During peak-periods in the evening 30 per cent of traffic that we get on the network is Netflix.
“Just in that entertainment piece alone, leaving business aside, there’s a huge appetite for streaming media and stuff like that.”
“That’s what people are wanting and that’s what NBN can provide so it’s an exciting thing to come to Collie.”
“We are aiming to ensure the process is simple for those looking to sign up with Telstra. One call to our dedicated customer service team and we can help take care of the rest.”
