Local firefighters from the Shire of Collie Bush Fire Brigades are urging the community to prepare their family and property ahead of the bushfire season.
The Shire’s Deputy Bush Fire Control Officer Shane Hickson said it was essential that everyone knew their bushfire risk and had prepared a bushfire survival plan prior to the bush fire season.
“Bushfires can start suddenly and move very fast, and it’s essential that if you live or travel near bush you know what you will do if a fire occurs,” he said.
“Now is the time to sit down with your family and create a bushfire survival plan. This plan will help you take action and avoid making last minute decisions that could prove deadly.
“To prepare your property for bushfire, create a 20 metre building protection zone around your property that includes clearing the area of rubbish, long grass and other materials that could catch fire.
“A well prepared property has a better chance of surviving a bushfire.”
Mr Hickson said the brigades have been busily preparing for the bushfire season by conducting controlled burns, holding bushfire information sessions and ensuring the brigade appliances are ready for action.
“Bush Fire Brigade members volunteer their time to prevent and respond to bushfires, however we need to community to do their part and make sure residents and householders are adequately prepared this season,” he said.
