THE premier event of the Collie Golf Club’s summer season, the Bluewaters Power Summer Open, was won in fine style by veteran Jim Larsen last weekend.
The sprightly 73-year-old proved that age is no barrier in golf, putting together back-to-back 18-hole rounds of 41 points.
Larsen’s 82 points was three better than the up-and-coming Ryan Dye, on 79, after rounds of 37 and 42. Busselton’s Ralph Bilsby made a welcome return to his home town to finish in third spot, holding off Danny Cheng in a countback after both had posted 74 points.
Bilsby came home strongly with 39 on Sunday after a tidy 35 the previous day. Cheng had rounds of 40 (Saturday) and 34, starting his second round with birdies on No’s 1 and 2. John Michalak was Saturday’s nett winner.
Michalak finished with 40 points to edge out Wanneroo’s Peter Shaw, on 39. Sunday’s nett winner was Kwinana’s Robert Gauci on a countback from Harvey’s Andrew Henderson after both had scored 39 points.
Shaye Trezise was a runaway winner in the gross section with 72 points, eight better than runner-up Garry Beard. Trersize provided the highlight of the day on Saturday, when paring the course.
His 72 shots gave him 38 points off his two handicap.
Gross winner on Saturday was Collie’s Alex Tweedie, with 31 points (five over par), while Sunday’s winner, on 30, was Harvey’s Gary Beacham. Jill Hibben, of Busselton, was the ladies’ event winner.
Her 79 points (39 and 40) was eight better than Meadow Springs’ Nola Edwards, on 71, and nine better than Collie’s Debbie Vanvolenstee. Lynn Gillan (Kwinana) won Saturday’s nett with 36 points, one ahead of Ruzena Thompson (Mandurah), on 35.
Sunday’s nett was won by Mandurah’s Sandra McBride with 38, well ahead of runner-up Deidre Milne (Bunbury), on 33. Overall gross honours went to Bunbury’s Josephine Jones on 51, five better than Collie’s Vicki Graham on 46.
Gross winner on Saturday was Dot Lawrence (Collie) with 20, while Karan Murray, of Katanning, had 19 when taking the gross on Sunday.
CHRIS Connell and Dean Crowe were the winners of the four-ball-best-ball stableford played on Friday for the Bushwalkers trophies.
The sponsors would have been delighted with the 156 players who participated. Crowe and Connell had the excellent score of 51 to be three clear of the father-son combination of Warren and Patrick Hann, on 48.
Also in the allocation of trophies, with 47, were David Broadbent and Ian Annandale, who finished ahead of Dale and Graeme Miffling on a countback.
Other good scores were Neil Motion/John Michalak 46, Roger Hunter/Rod Miller 45, Zac Faries/Dillan Saunders, Kim Melvin/Graham Broad, Brian Banks/Doug Crowe, Chris Lowson/Kevin Ball, Bill Rybarczyk/Phil Hoskins 44.
Gross winners, with 69 off-the-stick, were Shaye Tresize and Warren Colgan, four better than Dave Blurton and Ed King. King was also rewarded for his eagle two on the par four No. 8. Margaret Ainsworth won the ladies’ stableford, with 36.
One behind, on 35, were hard working local ladies Lesley Motion and Lyn Simmonds.
KIM Metcalfe played the round of his life in last week’s Tuesday leisure day event. Metcalfe had 45 points in the 18-hole stableford to finish four better than Narrogin country member Norm Oates on 41.
Graham Williams made a welcome return to form by posting 39; 24 of these coming on the second nine to enable him to edge out Gary Old. Frank Battista was the best vet, with 38, a score he shared with David Laird. Others to receive vouchers: Neil Motion, Dean Rakich 37, Alan Kent 36.
Trevor Lawrence (No. 4), Trevor Graham (7), Ray Alp (9), Les Marsden (14) and Jim Hine (18) won the novelties.
