Collie Golf Club
IT WAS a good news week for Collie Golf Club member Rod ‘Rocket’ Miller last week.
Midweek Miller received confirmation that he was cancer free, after months of treatment, and on Saturday he celebrated with an easy win in an 18-hole stableford event contested by 66 golfers. Miller, who has for many years been one of the club’s low markers, had his handicap blow out to double figures as he battled cancer. Last Saturday’s form was reminiscent of old times as Miller scored plus seven to record the easiest of wins.
Second placed Ken Wood maintained his recent good form for plus three, while pars on holes 17 and 18 enabled Joe Italiano to get the better of Greg Hales, Colin Giblett and Geoff Lee after all four had finished with plus two. Jim Hine and Darren O’Brien had plus one, while all square were Brett Smith, Bruce Jackson and Garry Beard, as was the associates’ best scorer, Betty White. John Williamson had the flat stick working well, winning both longest putt novelties, on No’s 6 and 18. Nearest the pins were won by Garry Beard (4), Neil Motion (7) and Rod Miller (14), with longest drive going to Chris Shannon (15).
PHIL Eldridge made the most of the odds and evens nine-hole scroungers event last Thursday with 35 off-the-stick giving him the best gross and a big win in the nett.
Eldridge’s 26 points was three better than the 23 returned by Ray Cooper and Trevor Graham. Kim Metcalfe and Keith Godfrey finished with 22, while also in the vouchers on 21 were Steve Gianola, Ed Riley and Bruce Jackson. Vicki Graham, who had the best associates’ score of 18, won the novelty on hole No. 4, with the others going to Fred Bronickis (1), Greg White (6), Phil Eldridge (7) and Eric Annandale (9).
GRAHAM Williams had his putter running hot in last week’s Chris Shea sponsored Tuesday leisure day stableford. Williams sunk a long birdie putt on his last hole to post 39 for a one point win over Pat Coll, Chris Shea and Phil Warburton, on 38. Harvey visitor Kevin Burton had 37, while Roger Hunter finished one further back on 36. Finishing with 35 each were Charlie Buemi, Colin Giblett, Ray Cooper, Alan Kent, Terry Reeves and Jim Larsen. Novelty winners were Colin Naysmith (No. 4), Phil Warburton (7), Graham Williams (9), Kevin Burton (14) and Doug Crowe (18).
THE third of the club’s Nine & Dine events was held last Sunday and again proved popular with many visitors enjoying golf in fine weather and a meal in the clubhouse. The success of this event is due to the tireless efforts of club secretary Redgie Old. It has exposed the club to many people who would normally not be involved in club activities. Members are asked to assist with forthcoming Nine & Dine events by adding their names to the list of workers on the clubhouse noticeboard.
THIS week’s events: today (Thursday), nine-hole scroungers; Saturday, 18-hole stableford; Tuesday, 18-hole leisure day event.
