Country Week Cricket 2017
COLLIE had a successful campaign finishing second in C Section with three wins and two losses.
A feature of the week was the spread of good performances across the bowling and batting areas with no standout players, but by an even team performance.
Indicative of this the top run scorer for Collie – Greg Tomasini with 120 runs was down in 18th place overall in C-grade. He was followed by Anthony Hutt with 91 from two games (32nd); Kim Rush 82 from four games (40th); Callum Tonkin and Matt Tanner – both with 71 runs from four innings in 47th place.
Tanner headed the bowling aggregates with nine wickets at 15 (12th place); Brendan Ebert eight at 7.5 (14th); Rush seven at 12 (22nd); Jacob Denholm six at 17 (33rd); Tyson Hayes six at 23 (37th) and Aiden Parkin five at 6.2 from two games (40th). With seven players in the squad, 18 years of age or under, it was a meritorious performance under captain Matt Tanner.
Day 1: Collie 9/275 (Tomasini 58, Malatesta 57, B Kent 39, M Tanner 32, B Moloney 29, K Rush 21*) defeated Esperance (No 2) 122 (Ebert 2/0, Parkin 2/3, Tanner 2/21).
Day 2: Collie 56 (Tomasini 21, J Sheppard 13, Brown 4) lost to Fortescue 157 (Hayes 3/29, Denholm 2/22, Tanner 2/33).
Day 3: Collie 115 (Rush 39, Tanner 17) lost to Upper Great Southern (2) 132 (Ebert 2/9, Rush 2/18, Hayes 2/21). A 40 run last wicket stand salvaged a win for UGS.
Day 4: Collie 184 (Tonkin 43, Hutt 43, Tomasini 24, Tanner 21, Rush 19) defeated Warren Blackwood (2) 122 (Ebert 4/23, Rush 3/15, Denholm 2/27).
Day 5: South Midlands (2) 154 (Tanner 4/18, Parkin 3/28, B Kent 2/24) lost to Collie 6/164 off 32 overs (Hutt 48, Williams 43, Parkin 25*, Kent 21).
B-grade cricket
COLLIE took on Donnybrook in the first Sunday fixture of the year.
The occasion also marker the 100th appearance for T20 specialist, Mathew Tanner.
The day began on the wrong foot with captain Seth White losing another toss and being sent into the field on what proved to be the best pitch prepared at Roche Park all year.
Steve ‘Snake’ Ireland and Mark Williams took the new ball and struggled somewhat to make early breakthroughs.
The Donnybrook openers had the outside of the bat beaten many times and were putting away the bad balls well.
The opening partnership was broken by Ireland who managed to get an inside edge that was well taken by a flying Tomasini down leg side.
One-hundred-gamer Mathew Tanner was thrown the ball and managed to get a wicket with his first ball after uncharacteristically taking a catch in slips a few overs earlier.
It was proving to be a good day for Tanner as he grabbed another two wickets to finish with 3 for 9 off three overs.
When Fraser Hislop finished off the last batsmen, Donnybook had managed to put 102 on the board which summed up a good bowling and fielding performance for Collie after Australia Day weekend activities.
Collie’s best: Tanner 3/9 off 3, Ireland 3/27 off 10, B. Kent 2/26 off 7.
The swashbuckling veteran Tom Plummer and crafty young Liam Reuben walked out to begin the chase.
The normal fire and ice routine worked well with Plummer knocking the Donnybrook bowlers into and over the fence while Reuben worked the field well until Plummer fell for 37 with the score on 47.
One-hundred-gamer Tanner was again in the action with a promotion to number three.
Reuben fell soon after for a well made 11 and an out of sorts Seth White was in and out quickly for a duck.
There was a belief that Tanner had finally come of age as a batsmen as he blocked the good balls and punished the bad ones.
However, this was shown to be false when he missed a straight one and was clean bowled for 29 with the score on 97. With the Kent boys batting together and only six runs needed, the game was well in Collies favour. An LBW for Austin Kent meant that brother Brayden would have household bragging rights for the next week. Fraser Hislop got the team over the line in the 17th over with a lofted drive over the infield for four securing two bonus points for Collie. Collie’s best: Plummer 37, Tanner 29 and Reuben with 11.
The win keeps the gap with Colts to three points in a top of the table clash for top spot next week. The Saturday game is also Pink Stumps day at the cricket club where a marquee will be set up.
Pine Hauliers B-grade Man of the Match: Matt Tanner – 99pts.
C-grade cricket
COLLIE def by Burekup; Collie 5/202 from 45 overs; Aaron Worlley 63, Connor Mumme 33, Steve Fraser 23. Burekup 1/203 from 24.1 overs; Kim Rush 1/20.
Kleenheat C-grade Man of the Match: Aaron Worlley – 63pts.
D-grade had a bye.
Golf
IN extremely hot conditions Jamie Thomson was as cool as ice and produced a great round of golf to win the Jaydon Ellery sponsored event.
Thommo matched the thermometer reading with his round of 39 points to be a clear winner from the other 50 members playing. Graham Williams snuck out in the morning to beat the hit and claim second spot with 37 edging out the evergreen Phil Warburton on a count back also on 37.
Jim Hine and Brad Swan played to their respective handicaps returning 36 followed by Dave Blurton, Jay Robinson, Warren Hann and Neil Motion all on 34. Michelle Tate continued her good run of form claiming top spot for the ladies with 36 followed by Shirley Sanderson on 33.
Novelties winners: No. 4 B. Swan, D. Vanvollenstee; No. 6 Redgie; No. 7 B. Swan; No. 14 D. Blurton; No. 15 B. Swan; No. 18 C.Flynn.
ON Tuesday a good field of 41 competed for the club event. High scoring was a feature and Darren O’Brien eventually came out the winner with an impressive 44 points. Jessiah Crowther held down second position with 42 followed by John Wray 39, Greg Moyle, Rodney Miller and Garry Old all on 38, James Larsen and Peter Coombs 37, Pat Coll, Fred Bronickis and Trevor Lawrence 36. The best vet on the day went to Colin Naysmith with 38 points.
THURSDAY scroungers was won by Ray Cooper with 20 points. David Broadbent was alone in second spot with 19 followed by John Wray, Rob Roth and Alan Banks all returning 18. Garry Beard had the best gross with 38 off the stick.
Next week: 18-hole par for the Peel Golf Centre; Tuesday leisure day; and Thursday scroungers – normal times.
Harness Racing
TRENT Wheeler and the Justins family travelled to Albany last Saturday night, both having success.
With a winner and three seconds Trent started the night behind the fancied Bad Boy Axel who lived up to his name by blowing the start for trainer Dave Stringer.
In the next event he was behind the short priced favourite Track the Navajo for trainer Amy Stone. The mare settled last before going three wide for the last 500 metres and going on for a nose win as a $2.00 the win and $1.20 the place chance.
Adda Spoilt Pomme was a rank outsider but he belied his price when facing the breeze early before getting a trail and going three wide in the run to the line for a superb second for Trent. Supporters would have been over the moon with his place dividend of $8.60. Trent again partnered a Dave Stringer starter in Bouchee in the second last event. She was eased out of the gate to settle well back before going three wide with a lap to go for another good second. This consistent mare was good value at $1.80 for the place.
In the final event Jack and Wayne Justins combined with Kaydee Stratton who began well to lead and then hand up and sit behind the pacemaker. At the 400m mark Jack pulled him out to storm to the front entering the straight but was collared in the shadows of the post. This horse has also been consistent this preparation and was well fancied as a $2.60 place chance.
The action moved to Williams on Sunday afternoon and the Leo Wallrodt trained and driven Cheval de Retour had a lovely run behind the leader before going on for a fine second. The grey gelding rewarded his connections with a place dividend of $3.80.
Trent Wheeler was back in the action with Graham Norris’ filly Artistic Lilly who ground out a tough third as a $3 place hope. Former Collie trained pacer Go Sailing On went well for his new trainer Matthew Scott winning the last event for his owners David Hunter and Gary Wood. He paid $3.20 and $1.80.
The Wheelers then travelled to Pinjarra on Monday where trainer Brian had his talented mare Once Bitten engaged. From her barrier on the outside of the back line she settled one out and two back for reinsman Trent before sprinting home in the straight to grab second place behind the short priced favourite, My Platinum Belle. Returning a nice $3.90 place dividend Once Bitten should continue with her form now she has found it.
The racing in Williams did not change the leaders in the Reinsperson, Junior Reinsperson and Trainer awards for Williams, Bridgetown and Collie Harness Racing clubs in Shannon Suvaljko, Bailey McDonough and Frank Bonnett but the action is likely to liven up in Bridgetown on Sunday, with the running of the heats for the John Martin Memorial an $8000 race to be run the following week in Collie’s opening meet of the season.
Anyone who wishes to be part of the Punters Club in Collie can send their $50 to the secretary at P.O. Box 91. Entry forms can be found in the full page ad in this week’s Collie Mail. Sunday’s Bridgetown program is the only South West meeting this weekend.
Rugby
Busselton Jetty 7's
THE Collie Mongrels travelled to Busselton on Saturday for the annual Jetty 7's.
In what was beautiful beach weather, a rugby tournament was played. A squad mixed up of regular players and some new faces braved the steamy conditions in fine style. Although we didn't win as many games as first hoped, the boys all stuck together and played an exciting brand of rugby. Three guys pulled out on the morning of the tournament.
The first game went to script with eventual tournament winners Rockingham who were too good for the Mongrels, winning the game comprehensively.
For the next game, two Western Force players in Jono Lance and Angus Cottrell came along to lend their support to the boys by giving some tips and running water for the club.
It must have helped, because the Mongrels were too strong for the Curtain University Goats winning 26-0 scoring four tries.
The next opponents were the Bunbury Barbarians in what was a must win game for both teams. Silly errors and two yellow cards cost Collie dearly losing the match 26-10.
Dunsborough Dungbettles came next and their well trained and well prepared squad proved too good for a tiring, injury depleted Collie team, running in a 57-10 score line.
Perth Irish were the final team to play and down five injured players, Collie found it all to much to overcome losing 40-0.
The Collie Rugby Club would like to thank the volunteers who made the day possible, and the squad of: Peter Bellden, Steve Rogers (c), Matt Wilson, Stevie Hema, Byron Edwards, Caleb Clendon, Grant Algeo, Jordan Bell, Victor Maisake, Ray Reti, Darrell Pere and Ijah Coyle. Your efforts were much appreciated. Training starts for the upcoming season on February 16 at the Collie High School and people of all skill levels are encouraged to come along and join our ever growing club.
