LAST Saturday the Collie Junior Year 8 cricket team took on Dallyelup for the third time this season. The previous meetings were won by Dallyelup, the first by 20 runs and then by seven. This time it was Collie who knocked off the second placed team by six runs, showing how well they’re developing.
Collie were sent in to bat. Jackson Broadbent, who is improving well with the bat, opening with Max Ireland. The pair put on 23 against two good opening bowlers before Broadbent was out for 10. Ireland, whose batting technique is starting to look solid, was retired on 16. Number 3 Josh Elliott is another player who is improving almost by the day, and while Adam Worlley (1) and Zac Reuben (0) went quickly, Elliott was joined by Judd Rinder and the pair put on 38 until Rinder was out for a well-made 26. Elliot was retired on 16 and then Blayden Coverly belted a quickly made 12. Archie Boyle batted well for his six runs but unfortunately Baxter Miller and Flynn Williams both scored ducks. Cody Irvine did his job to hang around with returning batsman Ireland and Elliott. Ireland wasn’t able to add to his 16 but Elliott and Irvine added 22 for the last wicket. Irvine finished five not out and Elliott was the pick of the batsman with a fantastic 28no.
Worlley and Rinder opened the bowling and conceded only 12 runs in the first six overs. From there Dalyellup were hard to budge and Collie did well to keep the scoring rate under control despite not taking wickets. Miller (2 overs 0/10), Williams (2 overs 0/7), Irvine (2 overs 0/12), Broadbent (3 overs 0/16), Ireland 2 overs (0/19), Reuben (4 overs 0/22) and Boyle (2 overs 0/8) all bowled without being able to get a breakthrough. The second wicket didn’t fall until Dallyelup had reached 118 in the 25th over when Worlley managed a caught and bowled.
Needing 27 off the last three overs Worlley (6 overs 2/25) and Rinder (5 overs 1/21) held their nerve and closed the game out. Dalyellup needed 13 off the last over from Rinder. In a comedy of errors the boys pulled off a run-out when Worlley threw the ball to Rinder at the bowler’s end. Needing seven off the last two balls, Rinder bowled a dot ball then picked up a caught and bowled off the last ball. Well done Collie.
