The Collie Public Library and Shire of Collie have officially launched the Little Libraries project throughout town.
Collie Public Library manager Alison Kidman and library officer Sara Cole visited Fairview Primary School to officially open the first fully operational Little library.
Fairview PS principal Andrew Whitney and librarian Donna Gardiner also attended the opening.
The library is currently installing 10 Little Libraries.
The libraries will be placed outside all five primary schools in Collie and Allanson, the Collie PCYC, Ngalang Boodja, Scout Hall and Our Community Garden.
Ms Cole said the project is based on a ‘take a book, leave a book’ system.
“If you’ve got books that you’ve read and don’t particularly want to read them again, but they’re good books, you can leave those at the libraries, so theoretically you’re going to have a constant rotation of books,” she said.
“It might be in one little library and end up at a different little library.
“It’s really just to get books out into the community.”
People are able to take books from the stands and replace them with different books for extended periods.
The Collie Public Library first established the book exchange program in 2016.
Since then, each Little Library has been built by the Collie Heritage and Menshed Group inc.
The Little Libraries were painted by volunteers from the schools and organisations involved.
