The Collie Radio Control Club are officially up and racing at their recently created Wallsend Street track.
The club formed last year and currently has 33 members, as well as holding race meetings where people from across the South West compete.
Club Coordinator Jason Stanley said they now have all of their recently purchased lap timing gear in operation at the track and are looking to make further improvements as the club grows.
“We have got all the lap timing gear up and running, we want to upgrade some of it but we are still looking for grants,” he said.
“The other side of it is just about getting all of the kids involved and helping out with the track prep, it’s all volunteer based.”
Mr Stanley said the club have been working in partnership with the Collie BMX Club, including sharing their canteen facilities and mutual fundraising projects.
The clubs have recently installed new flooring, air conditioning and shelving in the clubrooms, as well as renovating the canteen.
Mr Stanley said the club are currently mid-season, with five races held so far.
“It’s just getting us all together and just about having fun really, that’s what it’s all about,” he said.
“Basically, we are here every Tuesday for training then Sunday is the big race meet.”
Mr Stanley said Collie has the only radio control racing track in the South West, which means people travel quite a distance to compete.
“We have over 50 cars on the Sunday so about 35 people racing, so it’s quite big, it’s actually bigger than half of the Perth clubs,” he said.
“The Albany club come up all the time, quite a few from Bunbury who come up the hill to race, there has been a lot of interest from Perth.
“Bunbury doesn’t have a track, the next closest track is in Perth, there is no other track down south. The only other one further south is in Esperance.”
Mr Stanley said the club hope to upgrade their track from a dirt track to a clay-based course, which would be lower maintenance.
The club welcomes all ages and abilities to join.
