The WA Labor Party has announced a proposal designed to provide a training and development upgrade for Collie’s South Regional TAFE campus.
Shadow Training and Local Jobs Minister Fran Logan spoke about the McGowan Government’s plan during his visit to Collie on Monday, February 20.
Mr Logan said the plan to turn Collie TAFE into a specialist mining training facility would assist the town’s coal industry and the local work force into the future.
“We’re going to re-build TAFE, one of the places we want to start in is here in Collie because it is an underutilised resource,” he said.
“We are going to put $5 million into this college here and there is going to be funding after that, continuous funding for the employment of new lecturers as well.
“The Collie coal industry will be here for decades to come so we need to make sure the next generation of local workers get the best possible start in their careers.”
Mr Logan said the $5 million would be provided by Royalties for Regions as part of the Labor Party’s plan for Collie.
Mr Logan toured the electorate alongside Member for Collie-Preston Mick Murray.
Mr Murray said the upgrade would help trainees and apprentices gain qualifications in town.
“There are simply not enough local people employed at Collie’s mines,” he said.
“We can get more of our young people into those local jobs by giving them the best mining training in the state – right here in town.”
