The Collie Men’s and Women’s Hockey Associations are shooting for success throughout 2017.
Collie’s men’s and women’s South West league sides are set to clash with teams from across the district from March 24.
Last year, the Collie A2 Men’s Hockey side beat Marist in the grand final of the Bunbury and Districts Hockey Association competition.
Players from the side took home the Best and Fairest, Highest Goal Scorer and Best on Ground in the grand final for the Bunbury and Districts Hockey Association awards.
The team is now moving to the A1 division for 2017.
The Collie Women’s SW League side also reached the grand final, losing to Boyanup in extra time.
Player Dannii Macintyre was named Highest Goal Scorer in the South West Hockey League.
The men’s and women’s sides have 15 to 20 nominated players each for the new season so far, with both teams still looking for more participants.
In addition, the Collie Men’s and Women’s Hockey Association competitions are set to kick off in April this year.
Amaroo and SW League hockey player and Collie Women’s Hockey Association secretary Jo Crowe said the Collie Women’s Hockey Association is producing quality players throughout multiple competitions.
“The women’s competition has always been strong locally we have two grades and we have four teams in each grade and also with the travelling side, with the Collie side, we made the grand final last year,” she said.
Mustangs player and Collie Men’s Hockey Association president Kevin Crowe said the men’s teams will be strong and competitive in 2017.
“With the Men’s competition I think there should be another strong year, the local comp was pretty even last year there was only a point separated the first two and only three points separated the next three or four sides on the ladder,” he said.
“Another strong, competitive, even year from the men’s side of things and hopefully we can go down to Bunbury and be competitive down there, push for a finals spot after stepping up a grade.”
Collie has also fielded players for the South West Strikers.
The town is set to host multiple SW Strikers fixtures in July.
Macintyre, Narelle Michalak, Gareth Old, Abbey Barber, Laura Crowe, Azlyn Pike, Jaide Read-Wallis, Colin Crowe and the Collie A2 Men’s side all received nominations at the 2016 Shire of Collie Sports Awards.
Cara Swan won the Special Achievement award.
